Gabriel is a
little boy of barely two years old who is suffering from a serious
genetic disorder which leads to the progressive deterioration of
vital functions.
While
awaiting a cure, the aim is to keep Gabriel both mentally and
physically active by means of continuous rehabilitative care. To
achieve this, he needs everybody’s help.
The
non-profit organization “Insieme per Gabriel” (Together for Gabriel)
came into being through the desire of friends to provide economic
assistance for the family. Even the smallest contribution on your
part will be of enormous significance.

Gabriel’s story
Gabriel
began to show signs of being unwell, he had trouble eating and was
not gaining weight. So began the races to the hospital, the tests,
the sleepless nights. They had to rush from the hospital in Biella
to that of Novara; during the Easter holidays Gabriel’s life hung by
a thread. But the little boy proved that he would not give up
easily, he fought with all his might and he recovered. Dark days
were to follow, when Helga spent every day at the hospital in Novara,
enclosed all day in an isolation ward with her baby. Worst of all
was having to leave him there every evening.
Not for
them the walks in the park, the games with other children or the
excitement of watching him crawl and walk. But we never lost the
hope that Gabriel’s illness would finally be diagnosed and treated
and that both he and his family might have a normal life.
An even
harder blow was to follow, however, when after several tests it was
discovered that Gabriel suffers from MUCOLIPIDOSIS type II : a
rare lysosomal disease, that is, a genetic illness caused by a
defect in one of the numerous enzymes whose job it is to break down
certain molecules within a cell.
At present
there is no cure for this disease which leads progressively to a
deterioration of vital functions. Many studies are underway which
lead us to hope that Gabriel may soon be treated and that the
illness against which he is fighting so courageously may be
defeated.
Until that
day comes, it is very important for him to have constant and
frequent psycho-motor rehabilitation and the use of specialized
treatment centres.
We are
fighting with Gabriel, together with his parents and his family.
That is why we have set up this association, because the very least
we can do is to help them economically in this battle.
This kind
of support, apart from the bonds of affection which bind us to
Gabriel, his mother and his father, is a gesture of love towards
life itself and towards a child who, though very young, has never
surrendered even for a moment. And we will not surrender either.
